Roqiye Tavakoli is an Iranian female film director. She was born in Yazd, Iran. Following her childhood enthusiasm, she moved to Tehran at age 18 to study at Sooreh, a university in this capital city. However, she never breaks her connection with her hometown. Almost all her movies set and filmed in Yazd, namely her two feature films, Mothering (2016), Mehran (2019) and 30 short movies, which brought her many national and international rewards. Moreover, she has been teaching cinema in Yazd Art and Culture University, since she took a master’s degree in Dramatic Literature.
In the course of her career, Roqiye has organized several film festivals and workshops. Her name has also appeared in the list of juries and selection committees in various festivals. Additionally, a significant part of her career is devoted to directing documentaries, commercials, and music videos in various topics.
Roqiye is a female filmmaker and this fact is highlighted in her oeuvre. She has employed her art in order to advocate women’s right, since she was a university student. Children and motherhood are other themes on which she has zoomed. This avid director is still into expanding her knowledge and experiences of filmmaking to voice women loader and give her audience the opportunity to see the world from a lens of an Iranian women.
